Bitumen 30/45 — Hard Grade With Added Tolerance
A wider penetration band for slightly more flexibility without leaving hard-grade territory.
Bitumen 30/45 sits just below 30/40 in stiffness, widening the penetration window slightly (typically 30–45 mm/0.1) to allow marginally more flexibility without moving into medium-grade territory. This small shift matters in practice: pavements built with 30/45 tolerate slightly more thermal movement before microcracking begins, which can extend service life in regions with meaningful day-night temperature swings even though summer peaks remain extreme. It’s still firmly a hard grade — closer in behavior to 30/40 than to 35/50 — but the added tolerance is often enough to satisfy specifications that found 30/40 too rigid for local conditions.
