Bitumen 30/40 — A Precise Hard-Grade Specification
For projects whose national standard calls for this exact penetration window.
Bitumen 30/40 occupies the narrow window between 20/30 and 30/45, and exists mainly because certain national and regional specifications define their hard-grade requirement at this exact penetration band rather than accepting the more commonly available 20/30. The physical behavior is close to 20/30 — high resistance to deformation, limited low-temperature flexibility — but the marginally wider penetration range gives slightly more tolerance in production and workability during compaction. For buyers whose specification explicitly calls for 30/40, substituting 20/30 risks non-compliance even though the practical performance difference is small.
