Bitumen 40/50 — Medium-Hard Grade for Warm Climates
Specified where standard 60/70 proves too soft under local heat and traffic.
Bitumen 40/50 is a medium-hard grade used specifically where 60/70 — the global default — proves too soft for local climate or traffic conditions, but a full hard grade isn’t necessary. The narrower penetration band relative to 60/70 gives measurably better resistance to rutting at elevated pavement temperatures, at a modest cost to low-temperature flexibility. It’s a common substitute grade in warm-climate national specifications that have moved away from 60/70 specifically because of rutting complaints in the field, without going as far as adopting a genuinely hard grade like 30/40.
