Heading: Bitumen 40/60 — A Regional Specification Grade
Positioned between 40/50 and 50/70 for specific national standards.
Bitumen 40/60 sits between 40/50 and 50/70, and — like several grades in this middle band — exists to satisfy national specifications that define their own precise penetration requirement rather than adopting the more commonly traded 50/70 or 60/70. Functionally, it behaves close to both neighbors: firm enough to resist moderate rutting, flexible enough for general paving use. The main reason to specify 40/60 rather than a neighboring grade is regulatory compliance rather than a meaningfully different engineering outcome.
