Bitumen 70/100 — Flexible-Grade Bitumen for Cooler Climates
Trading some heat stiffness for better resistance to thermal cracking.
Bitumen 70/100 is a genuinely softer grade than 60/70, with a penetration range and lower softening point that trade some high-temperature stiffness for meaningfully better low-temperature flexibility. In practice, this means pavements built with 70/100 resist thermal cracking better through cold seasons, at the cost of slightly reduced rutting resistance during peak summer heat — a trade-off that favors cooler climates where winter cracking is historically the bigger maintenance cost. It also serves as a common feedstock grade, since its softness makes it easier to further modify through cutback or emulsification processes.
